Friday March 30
4pm to 6pm Swanston Street, Melbourne city centre. UNITE union will be holding a demonstration. This demonstration will not be the usual run of the mill union rally; instead it will be more like an open air gig that take place within meters of the doors of Melbourne’s busiest fast food outlets. Some of Melbourne’s best local hip hop acts will play on the day including Illzilla, SS Pecker and Mata & Must. Taking place between 4pm & 6pm it is timed to take place after school on the last day of term. It is expected that hundreds of young people who work in fast food and retail will attend. UNITE will be using the demonstration to launch its new campaign called ‘Boost Our Pay’. The Boost Our Pay campaign has four key demands: * No to youth wages – Equal pay for equal work * No to wage cutting individual contracts (AWAs) * Boost the minimum wage to $16 per hour * For Secure hours - All casuals should have the option to be made permanent after six months |
