Official inflation is 1700 per cent. Skyrocketing food prices and high unemployment coupled with vicious repression by the regime make life one big struggle to survive for the majority of people. Recent strikes sparked an intensification of Mugabe's crackdown on dissent Munyaradzi Gwisai has been at the frontline of the struggle for the rights of workers and the poor and has faced beatings and arrest by the regime's security forces.
