Cultural History of the Whitlam Period

Tuesday September 12th
5.30pm for a 6.00pm start, 7.00 finish
Trades Hall
Crn Victoria & Lygon Sts
Carlton – Meet at the Bookshop

Followed by dinner for those interested

Nathan Hollier
“From Hope to Illusion? A Literary and Cultural History of the Whitlam Period”

Nathan’s thesis sets out to answer the question
‘What were the cultural causes of the defeat of the Whitlam government and the rise to dominance of neo-classical liberal public policy?’

He argues that the major cultural factor facilitating the rise of neo-liberal public policy in Australia was a broad-based process of Americanisation of Australian culture.

As always, any help with publicising this event would be greatly appreciated.

Thursday 24 August 2006
Mariana Hall

Sunshine
Mel Ref. 40 J1

A newly formed Mother's group is calling a meeting to discuss the Brimbank Council's backflip on a commitment to seek State Government funding for an outdoor 50 metre pool in Sunshine.

The Mother's group is concerned about the lack of recreational facilities for children and teenagers in the West. Residents, Schools, State Government MP's, Union Representatives, Councilors & the
Media are all invited to attend.

Sunshine residents have been waiting 14 years for the restoration of their 50 metre outdoor pool. The three outdoor pools in Sunshine lie in disrepair and demolition has commenced with NO commitment from council to provide our kids and our community with adequate swimming facilities.

Please ask if your school, kinder, sports club, social club etc can help make banners for the day and attend the meeting.

Melbourne Rally to defend the 107

12noon - 12.30pm
29 August
Outside Federal Court
Crn Latrobe & William Sts

On 5 July 2006, the Australian Building Construction Commission [ABCC] started legal action in the Federal Court against 107 construction workers on the Perth to
Mandurah rail project.

The power-drunk Howard Government is trying to use its unfair new work laws to crush 107 WA CFMEU members and their families. These proud WA unionists now face fines of $28,600 each. Even worse, the WA107 and their families now risk losing their homes because of crippling legal bills that could add up to millions of dollars.

On 29 August, their fight for justice will go to the Federal Court, and they need our support and help then and now.

When standing up for your workmates becomes a crime…

The WA107 became the target for this unjust legal attack after they stood by their mate, CFMEU Shop Steward Peter Ballard. Peter was sacked after raising a string of safety problems on the rail line site. A safety rep, Mal Peters, took annual leave with his family and went on a tour speaking about the WA107. He was sacked on his return.

Community Rally

1-3pm Sunday
Outside Sam Merrifield Library

WorkChoices Moonee Vally style!
Library workers are management's latest target at Moonee Valley City Council. CEO Peter Black and Ed Small are attacking existing conditions for new library staff. Management are going after library workers 35 hour week. The 35 hour week compensates staff for working evenings and Saturday mornings without penalty rates. Council are employing new staff on a 38 hour week and plan to work them outside the normal spread of hours without penalty rates!

This means new staff will have to work longer hours that will fall outside of the normal spread of hours without penalty rates.

Moonee Valley City Council Management plan to do this by "agreement" with new staff. But they are using Howard's definition of "agreement" that is – if new staff want a job or existing staff want a promotion they have to "agree" to lower conditions than the other staff – if they don't "agree" to be disadvantaged they don't get the job! That's the choice, NO Choice!

MVCC Library workers need you're support to send a strong message to MVCC management, that they can't get away with this.

We ask you all to come to our community rally and show your support for the library
workers struggle to maintain existing conditions. Lets all call on Council to honour
the EBA and Award.

It's time we all worked together to resist this attack on workers entitlements.

Please show your support by attending the community rally.
