Leafleting for the Noel Washington Rally in Melbourne

To build numbers for the Noel Washing rally on December 2 some train stations are already scheduled for leafleting. However we need further assistance with leafleting to ensure a good turnout.

Please download train station timetable showing priority train stations that need leafleting and call Liz 0402 657 392 or email liz@unionsolidarity.org to confirm when you are available to volunteer.

For any leafleting outside of these specified times, everyone should call 0407 512 494 with 24 hours notice to tell the Train, Rail and Bus Union what station and time they are leafleting. The Union will then communicate with Authorised Officers and Station Managers who can be made aware of the leafleting.

Rally leaflets can be collected at the reception of Trades Hall between 8.30am-5pm, crn Lygon and Victoria Sts Carlton South.

Keep in regular contact with http://www.unionsolidarity.org/ as the information above will be updated.

Noel Washington faces six months in prison for refusing to cooperate with the extraordinary and coercive powers of the Australian Building and Construction Commission.

Anyone interrogated by this outfit does not have the right to silence, can not choose their own lawyer and can not discuss what the commission has asked them about. These powers breach basic human rights and the ILO conventions to which Australia is a signatory. We are calling on the federal government to completely abolish the ABCC and all its powers.

"These laws they have at their disposal have no place in a so-called democratic society like Australia and they use those laws freely to go after ordinary workers." Noel Washington

Noel Washington and the ABCC

For as long as he can remember, he has always hated bullies. And because of that he has always spoken out or stood up against those with power who intimidate or harass people.

This time he risks losing his freedom, but the way Noel Washington sees it, he has no choice. Noel faces jail as he has been charged by the Department of Public Prosecutions and is set to appear in the Magistrates Court in August. The charge is for refusing to attend an interview with the Australian Building and Construction Commission (ABCC) – an organization that was set up by the Howard government to harass, intimidate and bully workers and their unions in the construction industry. more...
